Project Failure Files: Ignoring Career Development

In Episode 74 of the Project Failure Files weekly webcast, our focus was “Overlooking the Growth Curve,” in which Sharon and I unpack a failure that rarely shows up on dashboards but steadily erodes teams from the inside out: overlooking the career development of our team. When people become “good enough” at their jobs, managers often shift into maintenance mode, focusing solely on delivery while development quietly disappears. The work still gets done, but learning stalls—and with it, curiosity, motivation, and long-term engagement.

The conversation explores how this problem is amplified in high-pressure environments where “just get it done” becomes the default mindset. Sharon and I explain why disengagement doesn’t usually arrive as a loud complaint, but as a slow fade: fewer questions, less experimentation, and shrinking initiative. Teams may look efficient on the surface, but beneath that efficiency is fragility where skills lag behind technology, innovation slows, and retention quietly suffers as top performers seek growth elsewhere.

To counter this, we share practical ways leaders can make growth intentional rather than accidental. From catching plateaus early and embedding development into daily work, to identifying hidden potential and rewarding curiosity, we attempt to reframe learning as a performance multiplier, not a distraction. The episode closes with clear calls to action that challenge managers to ask better questions, create small stretch opportunities, and build teams that evolve alongside changing business demands instead of constantly playing catch-up.

Enjoy the episode!
