Project Failure Files: Ignoring AI Fears

In Episode 88 of the Project Failure Files weekly webcast, Sharon and I discuss “Ignoring the Human Anxiety Factor” in the final installment of our five-part miniseries examining the leadership issues that come with an AI deployment. As we point out, ignoring fears is a fast way to turn AI adoption into quiet resistance. The episode frames AI change as an emotional event, not a technical rollout: when people feel threatened—by job loss, loss of status, or being “measured” by a machine—they don’t argue loudly… they disengage, delay, and quietly work around the initiative.

The discussion unpacks how fear shows up in normal-looking behaviors: slow uptake, avoidance, side-channel complaints, “yes-but” meetings, and managers over-indexing on dashboards while missing sentiment. When leaders fail to name the anxiety, teams fill the gap with rumors, cynicism, and defensive habits—eroding trust and collaboration long before any metrics catch up.

The fix is proactive leadership: make the change story explicit, build psychological safety, and create structured support (training, office hours, guardrails, and clear escalation paths). Leaders should model curiosity, reward experimentation, and consistently reinforce that AI is an amplifier for people—not a scoreboard, not a surprise layoff note, and not a replacement plan in disguise.

Enjoy the episode!

Be sure to tune in next Monday, May 4th (May the Fourth Be With You!) at 9am Pacific for the next PFF episode as we discuss how succession planning is often neglected until it’s too late—leading to project delays and knowledge gaps when key people move on. Hope you can join us on our NEW YouTube channel (please subscribe!) or find us on LinkedIn.
