Summary of Guardians of M365 Governance Ep.30

Stop Putting Governance in Charge of Adoption (#GoM365gov Ep.30)In Episode 30 of the Guardians of M365 Governance monthly webcast, my co-hosts Ragnar Heil (@RagnarH), Joy Apple (@JoyOfSharePoint), and I are joined by fellow Microsoft 365 MVP Alan Cox, an AI Governance & Copilot Strategy Consultant based in Springfield, Missouri, to discuss a question that many organizations are only beginning to confront: should AI governance and AI adoption be owned by the same people? We examine the growing distinction between teams responsible for compliance, security, and risk management and those focused on helping employees embrace new ways of working. Rather than treating governance as a set of restrictions, we attempt to reframe it as an enabler that creates the guardrails necessary for safe experimentation, innovation, and long-term success.

A major theme throughout the episode is the difference between tool usage and true adoption. We argue that adoption is not measured by licenses assigned or logins recorded, but by meaningful changes in user behavior. Through examples drawn from Microsoft 365, SharePoint, OneDrive, and Copilot deployments, we highlight how organizations often migrate old habits into new platforms without realizing the business value of modern collaboration, and emphasize the importance of training, change management, and helping employees understand how AI can improve their daily work rather than simply introducing another technology initiative.

The conversation also looks ahead to the future of AI-enabled work, including agents, skills, Copilot capabilities, governance frameworks, and the need for organizations to create safe environments for experimentation, discussing why failure and iteration are essential parts of learning, how governance can reduce fear without stifling innovation, and why business outcomes should drive AI investments rather than technology trends. For leaders navigating AI adoption, governance, compliance, and organizational change, this episode offers practical insights into building programs that balance control with empowerment and deliver measurable value from AI initiatives.
