Project Failure Files: Toxic Negotiation Tactics
In Episode 51 of the Project Failure Files weekly webcast, our focus was “Letting Conflicts Fester,” in which Sharon and I explore the hidden dangers of pushing to “win” negotiations at any cost, a mindset that often leads to long-term damage to team morale, project sustainability, and partner relationships. We define what it really means to “win” in a project setting and explain how unchecked power dynamics, deadline pressure, or an eagerness to close a deal can result in decisions that overcommit teams, strain budgets, and erode trust.
Sharon and I reflect on personal stories of aggressive negotiation missteps and contrast them with examples where slowing down, saying no, or involving more stakeholders led to better, more sustainable outcomes. We also caution against over-promising deliverables without cross-functional input, sacrificing quality to meet unrealistic cost caps, or undermining colleagues just to gain client approval. Instead, they advocate for planning negotiation strategies in advance and modeling impacts before commitments are made.
The audience is encouraged to set clear ground rules with stakeholders, include the full team in assessing tradeoffs, and use negotiation as an opportunity to strengthen relationships—not extract compliance. By reframing negotiations as shared problem-solving instead of zero-sum games, teams can protect project health and create lasting value for all parties involved.
