August and September 2014 Content Wrap-Up

From a content perspective, these past two months were some of the quietest in the past 5 years, due to two things: first, I had my head down working on several new presentations, which, if you speak at major conferences, you know can be a very long process as you work out your content, demos, and the stories and examples you plan to share. And second, I was preparing to make my move from ISV back into consulting, with my last day at Metalogix on September 19th. I am now the Managing Director, Americas for GTconsult.

Following SPTechCon Boston, I was home for an entire day before traveling 30+ hours to Perth, Australia to begin my life as a consultant once again, working with a startup that I’ll be writing about in the coming weeks. So between the job change, the 3 conferences and their new content, and the extreme travel, I just wasn’t able to get as much writing done as I had hoped. But now that I have made the change, things should get back to normal.

What I did manage to do was stick to some of my common themes, such as governance:

Another big change that I have quietly announced is my move from a SharePoint MVP to an Office365 MVP. Like many of my peers, my content has increasingly focused on moving to the cloud, and the examples I share are usually done with an eye toward the SharePoint Online platform rather than on prem, so I decided to make it official. I’m still up for renewal on January 1st, but this change makes sense.

I have always had a strong focus on planning – specifically around information architecture and migration planning. Some of my content these past two months focused on this theme:

I’ve also been thinking about, and writing about the user experience, and, sp0ecifically, what organizations can do to get the most out of their SharePoint platform:

October is going to be a hectic month, but there will be a lot of content coming with it. Brad and Craig are heading to the US from Durban and Cape Town, South Africa (respectively) to help me officially launch GTconsult here in the US, and open a local branch in Redmond. They’ll be here for 2 weeks, participating in SharePoint Saturday Bend this weekend, and SPS Redmond next week. We’re looking at office space, interviewing people as we piece together a local team, and will be making visits to partners and customers in the region. Lots going on.
