Do You Need Office 365 Backup?

In case you missed it, earlier this month I moderated a fantastic web event with AvePoint’s VP of Product Strategy, John Hodges, and well-known author, Microsoft MVP, and Principal at Redmond & Associates, Tony Redmond (@12Knocksinna) in which they debated the merits of Office 365 backup. The event was kicked off with a preview from Dux Raymond Sy (@meetdux) and Hunter Willis (@HW_EndUser) and some background details on the topic — and it concluded with Dux and I discussing some of our personal takeaways from the event.

Kicking off the Great Debate with John Hodges and Tony RedmondDuring the session, John and Tony discussed the following questions/topics:

  1. Opening statement on the need for 3rd party Office 365 backup, and how organizations should approach their strategy.
  2. Many workloads in Office 365 have unfortunate API limitations. How does this impact an organization’s backup strategy and considerations?
  3.  How do you make an informed risk/ROI-based decision for your organization on your backup strategy?
  4. What is the future for Office 365 backup? Will 3rd party vendors still have a role, and if so, how will it evolve?

Following the back-and-forth on these questions, the two walked through several specific customer scenarios, including some scenarios from the audience. The event wrapped up with a handful of statements from various vendor websites and marketing material (including AvePoint) with John and Tony declaring each as either “Practical” or “FUD.”

I thoroughly enjoyed participating in this event — it was a great format, and audience feedback was fantastic. Kudos to Dux and team for pulling together the format and live poll! As I said during the wrap-up segment, I’d love to see his team capture other topics in this format, with a migration topic being my top suggestion. If you enjoyed the segment, let me know your thoughts on what topics to tackle next, and I’ll see what I can do.
