Blue Plate Special: Siouxsie and the Banshees
Siouxsie and the Banshees, formed in 1976 in London by Siouxsie Sioux and Steven Severin, emerged as pivotal figures in the post-punk movement. Initially linked with the punk scene, their sound evolved rapidly, characterized by its daring rhythmic and sonic experimentation. Their debut album, The Scream, released in 1978, received critical acclaim and marked the beginning of a transformative journey in music. The band underwent several lineup changes, notably adding guitarist John McGeoch and drummer Budgie, shifting towards a more alternative pop sound in the 1980s with albums like Kaleidoscope and Juju, which influenced the emerging gothic scene. I first became familiar with the band around 1983-84 because of Robert Smith’s involvement as their guitarist, and while I liked Hyaena, it was the album Tinderbox in 1986 that made me a huge fan.
The 1980s saw Siouxsie and the Banshees reach new heights with their innovative approach to music. The release of Peepshow in 1988 and their hit single “Kiss Them for Me” in 1991 expanded their influence and popularity, particularly in North America. Their ability to blend different musical styles with unique lyrical themes won them critical and commercial success, cementing their place as one of the most successful alternative pop groups of the decade.
Siouxsie and the Banshees disbanded in 1996, leaving behind a legacy of 11 studio albums and 30 singles. Siouxsie and Budgie continued to explore music with their second band, The Creatures, which was started back in 1981. The band’s influence remains profound, impacting a diverse range of genres and artists across the music spectrum, from Joy Division to Radiohead. Their bold, innovative sound and distinctive style continue to inspire new generations of musicians and fans alike.
