Blue Plate Special: Camouflage

CamouflageCamouflage is a German synth-pop trio formed in 1984 by Marcus Meyn, Heiko Maile, and Oliver Kreyssig. Originally called Licensed Technology, the band changed its name to Camouflage, inspired by a song by Japanese electronic music pioneers Yellow Magic Orchestra. The band quickly garnered attention with its distinctive synth-driven sound, culminating in the 1987 release of “The Great Commandment,” which became a dance club sensation and climbed the German and US dance charts. With this hit, Camouflage signed with Atlantic in the United States, launching their debut album, Voices & Images, which achieved international success and established the group as a prominent name in electronic music.

Throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, Camouflage continued to evolve, experimenting with new sounds and musical influences. Despite some commercial challenges, they persevered, producing albums such as Methods of Silence and Spice Crackers, which featured a mix of traditional and electronic instrumentation. Over the years, they achieved notable success with singles like “Love Is a Shield” and expanded their audience through tours across Europe and beyond. Marking their 30th anniversary in 2014, the band released The Box 1983–2013, a collection celebrating their career, followed by their eighth studio album, Greyscale, in 2015. With their enduring appeal and commitment to innovation, Camouflage remains an influential force in synth-pop music.
