Project Failure Files: No Meaningful Measurements
In Episode 24 of the Project Failure Files weekly webcast, our focus was “Measurement as the Foundation of Understanding,” in which Sharon and I emphasized that effective project management starts with accurate and meaningful measurement, which provides a foundation for understanding project health, making informed decisions, and tracking progress. We discussed methods for establishing relevant metrics that align with project objectives, from defining SMART criteria to balancing leading and lagging indicators, ensuring that metrics reflect the true progress and success of the project. By incorporating a measurement-driven approach, project teams can achieve greater clarity, improve risk management, boost team productivity, and ultimately enhance project outcomes, all while building a culture that values continuous improvement and long-term success.
We also explored how accurate measurement impacts project outcomes by enabling data-driven decision-making, early risk detection, and proactive adjustments to keep projects on track. This approach not only increases team productivity and focus but also builds stakeholder confidence through transparent reporting of progress and challenges. By setting clear, measurable goals, teams can maintain alignment with project priorities, contributing to a more predictable and successful project lifecycle.
To help project managers implement effective measurement practices, we shared practical steps such as establishing a measurement plan at the outset, using project management tools for real-time tracking, and regularly reviewing and adjusting metrics as the project evolves. We also highlighted a case study where measurement played a critical role in project success, demonstrating how having the right metrics can support adaptability and drive continuous improvement.
