Project Failure Files: Supporting Internal Champions
In Episode 21 of the Project Failure Files weekly webcast, our focus was “Championing Change: The Role of Internal Champions,” during which we examined the indispensable role that internal champions play in advocating for projects and driving adoption within their organizations. These champions, who are often influential employees rather than senior executives, help bridge the gap between project teams and end-users, creating excitement and encouraging engagement. Their involvement is especially crucial for digital transformation initiatives, where resistance to change can be a significant barrier to success. By promoting the project’s value and addressing concerns within their teams, these champions pave the way for smoother implementation and stronger outcomes.
We discussed insights from industry leaders who have successfully leveraged internal champions to overcome challenges and increase adoption rates. Through these examples, we highlighted the key traits of effective champions, such as credibility, strong communication skills, and a genuine enthusiasm for the project. Additionally, we underscored the importance of selecting champions who represent diverse departments, allowing for broader impact and helping the change message reach all areas of the organization.
To ensure champions are set up for success, we explored strategies for supporting and empowering them, from providing the necessary resources and training to establishing regular check-ins for guidance and feedback. Recognizing and rewarding champions is also essential, as this reinforces their value and keeps their motivation high. By nurturing these champions, organizations can foster a culture of change that extends beyond individual projects, promoting sustained improvement and innovation.
