Project Failure Files: Starting Without a Baseline
In Episode 28 of the Project Failure Files weekly webcast, our focus was “Establishing a Solid Foundation: Creating a Baseline,” in which Sharon and I focused on the crucial role of establishing a solid foundation through the creation of a project baseline and conducting a thorough discovery process. We highlighted the importance of setting clear expectations and defining baselines for scope, schedule, and budget to provide a reliable reference point for monitoring progress and managing changes. By walking through the role of a comprehensive discovery process, we explained how gathering essential information about requirements, risks, and stakeholder expectations is key to building realistic plans and avoiding project pitfalls like missed deadlines, budget overruns, and unmet stakeholder needs.
We also emphasized the challenges that arise when teams skip or rush through the discovery phase. Without a clear baseline or thorough discovery, projects can suffer from vague requirements, poor communication, and a lack of alignment between stakeholders and team members. This lack of understanding often leads to confusion, delays, and compromised project outcomes. Throughout our discussion, we provided practical strategies for creating comprehensive baselines, including involving stakeholders, incorporating risk and quality baselines, and documenting assumptions and constraints to guide decision-making.
Our goal was to underscore how comprehensive discovery and clear baselines set the stage for effective planning, risk management, and adaptability. We shared tips on leveraging project management tools, conducting regular baseline reviews, and integrating lessons learned from past projects to continually refine the discovery process. By prioritizing these foundational steps, teams can align project goals with stakeholder expectations, reduce uncertainties, and deliver successful outcomes.
