Project Failure Files: Pushing Your Team Too Hard
In Episode 39 of the Project Failure Files weekly webcast, our focus was “Pushing Your People Too Hard,” in which Sharon and I discussed the importance of balancing high expectations for your employees with support for career development in order to prevent burnout. While managers often focus on pushing teams to achieve more, failure to invest in their growth can lead to disengagement, fatigue, and high turnover. We explored the dangers of overworking teams without providing opportunities for skill-building, continuous learning, and professional growth, emphasized the need to create an environment where employees feel valued and invested in their roles.
The conversation highlighted strategies for fostering team engagement and sustaining productivity over the long term. We discussed the significance of recognizing untapped potential beyond job titles, mixing hard and soft skills through training programs, and rewarding behaviors that align with organizational goals. Leaders were also encouraged to cultivate ownership within their teams, empowering employees to innovate and contribute fresh perspectives. This creates a culture where everyone feels responsible for success and motivated to contribute to the team’s growth.
Finally, we addressed the long-term benefits of investing in people rather than focusing solely on short-term performance. By continuously developing employees and encouraging a growth-oriented culture, organizations can ensure stronger retention, higher morale, and sustainable productivity. This episode encourages leaders to proactively assess how they are investing in their teams to avoid burnout while maximizing their potential.
