Summary of Guardians of M365 Governance Ep.24

In Episode 24 of the Guardians of M365 Governance monthly webcast, Joy Apple (@JoyOfSharePoint) and I welcomed guest Jason Amgar, CTO and co-owner of AIMPACT Consulting, and a Microsoft Copilot Governance & Adoption Expert. This episode centered on the core tension every Microsoft 365 program wrestles with: people want speed and value (especially with Copilot), but the organization needs security, compliance, and sane boundaries. Jason framed governance as “guard rails that scale innovation safely,” arguing that the real objective isn’t restriction, but trust. When people trust the environment, they experiment more confidently; when everything is locked down, they route around IT and create shadow IT chaos.

A big theme was “we’ve seen this movie before.” The panel connected Copilot’s governance wake-up call to earlier cycles like FAST search and the Delve “debacle,” where improved discovery surfaced messy permissions, weak information architecture, and “security through obscurity.” Copilot amplifies those same issues—except now leadership feels the urgency because the perceived stakes are higher (legal liability, exposure, reputational risk). The takeaway: Copilot doesn’t create the data problem, it turns the lights on.

The most actionable guidance shared was about sequencing and psychology. Start with phased, department-by-department progress instead of “shut it all down,” keep momentum by training people on the web-grounded/free Copilot experiences while back-end remediation happens, and don’t dump adoption in IT’s lap. Adoption works best when it’s organic: let people opt in, require simple justification (use cases/ROI), build communities of champions, run office hours, and make governance a conversation so policies feel like enablement, not punishment.
